10/23/2017 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This coming Saturday, Octrober 28th, enjoy a day of cars, entertainment, food and fun here in Historic Downtown Yuma. Mi Vida Car Club is presenting the inaugural Cruising on Main Car Show, featuring a wide range of vehicular creations including lowriders, motorcycles, Euros, hot rods, originals and customs. They’ll be competing for trophies in all categories. Vehicle roll-in is from 8AM to 10AM, and show hours will be from 11AM to 5PM. Sounds like a blast – don’t miss it!
Also on Saturday, the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screening at the Historic Yuma Theatre, just in time for Halloween. The musical/comedy/horror show will feature a shadowcast of the film (that’s actors acting in front of the screen during the film). Audience members are invited to fully participate and costumes are encouraged, but they ask that you please leave the toast, hot dogs, prunes, rice, lighters and water guns at home. Midnight Madness Virgin Kits (or “prop bags”) with all of your prop needs will be available for purchase at the door. Don’t forget to brush up on your Time Warp dance moves before you come. And leave the kids at home, this thing is rated R and not for the faint of heart. Screening at 12:00 midnight, doors open at 11:00, 18 & over only, $5 general admission.
Happy Halloween!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Monte Volpe 2012 Primo Bianco (Mendocino County) $11.99 This is a blend of Arneis, Cortese, Tocai Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc sourced from hillside vineyards overlooking the Russian River in Mendocino County. It’s crisp and fresh, with aromas and flavors of ruby red grapefruit, peach and fennel.
Bodega Chacra 2014 Barda Pinot Noir (Patagonia, Argentina) $24.99 Bodega Chacra’s estate vineyards are located in Patagonia’s Rio Negro valley, some of them planted as long ago as the 1930’s. This cherry-and-lavender-scented Pinot Noir leans toward the Burgundian style, with a distinct earthy and spicy character and polished, fine-grained tannins.
Castelli di Grevepesa 2014 Toscana Rosso (Tuscany, Italy) $14.99 Castelli di Grevepesa’s Toscana Rosso is an uncomplicated and easy-drinking red blend with an enticing Tuscan character. Aromas of spicy cherry and subtle herbal tones give way to a palate of sweet dark cherry and currant fruit, with firm tannins.
Chateau Puech-Haut 2012 Prestige Rouge (Languedoc, France) $17.99 The Prestige Rouge mixes Grenache sourced from 80 year-old vines with Syrah from vines up to 45 years of age. Fermented and aged only in concrete, it’s a dense and powerful red, perfectly capturing the warm character of the Mediterranean with floral accents of dark fruits, spices, cracked pepper and garrigue.
Girard Winery 2014 Firebirds Red (Napa Valley) $19.99 The Girard Winery’s Firebirds red blend is a rich and full-throttle wine, with a juicy flamboyance underlaid by fine depth and elegance. Intense aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries and blueberries mingle with accents of chocolate and espresso.
J Lohr 2014 Tower Road Petite Sirah (Paso Robles) $22.99 Vivid, pure blackberry-raspberry-blueberry flavors are terrifically ripe, juicy and deeply concentrated. Full-bodied tannins manage to stay in the background to let a delicious core of dark fruit flavors swirl on the palate. Peppery accents enliven a lasting finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Black Stallion 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $27.99 This full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon shows aromas and flavors of blackberry, plum, red currant and cedar. The rich fruit is accented with a savory array of spice and floral tones like nutmeg, ginger, lavender, vanilla cream and espresso bean. Smooth, well-integrated tannins carry it to a lingering, elegant finish.
Cloudfall 2016 Pinot Noir (Monterey County) $15.99 The grapes for Cloudfall Pinot Noir are sourced from Sweetwater Vineyard, in the warmer southern region of Monterey County. The grapes grow on a south-facing slope of the Monterey Mountains, giving this wine a vibrant character elegantly balanced by the acidity characteristic of coastal growing sites.
Two Oceans 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Western Cape, South Africa) $9.99 The Two Oceans Cab-Merlot is a juicy, rich and fruit-centric South African red, with enough tannins and complexity to keep it interesting. A great wine to serve with dinner, or just by the glass.
Cheers!
