Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

It’s still a little ways off, but I want to give everyone some notice that two weeks from this coming Saturday, on November 18th, the Foothills Optimist Club will present another Wine Tasting Fundraiser, once again in the beautiful outdoor garden area of the Sanguinetti House Museum (240 S. Madison Ave.) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  They stage this benefit event to raise funds for their ongoing youth programs, and they always ask yours truly to select and pour some nice wines for the evening (and naturally I’m happy to oblige!)  We used to do the events right here at the Wine Cellar, but the change to the Sanguinetti House Museum location affords the opportunity for folks to enjoy the wines (and lots of great appetizers) while enjoying our mellow fall weather in a nice outdoor garden setting.  Give Mary Ann a call at 580-7293 to order tickets (cost is just $25 per person, or $20 for groups of four or more); they’ll also be available at the door.  Put this one on your calendar!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Tenshən 2016 White Blend (Santa Barbara County)    $19.99 A blend of Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Chardonnay, this overflows with fleshy peach and apricot flavors edged by orange blossom and honeysuckle tones.  Notes of dried spice and matcha green tea emerge at the finish, along with a touch of hazelnut.

Cloudfall 2016 Pinot Noir (Monterey County)    $15.99 The grapes for the Cloudfall Pinot Noir are sourced 100% from Sweetwater Vineyard, in the warmer southern region of Monterey County.  The grapes grow on a south-facing section of the Monterey Mountains, giving this wine a vibrant character elegantly balanced by the acidity characteristic of coastal growing sites.

Zenato 2014 Valpolicella (Veneto, Italy)    $14.99 Valpolicella is a traditional Veneto blend of the native Corvina, Rodinella and Molinara varietals. The nose exudes rich aromas of almonds and violets. It’s smooth in texture, with a vibrant mix of dark cherry and plum fruit edged with a touch of dark chocolate.

Smith & Hook 2014 Proprietary Red (Central Coast)    $17.99 Dark and hearty in the glass, this blend of Merlot, Malbec and Petite Sirah is lush and inviting to the nose, with aromas of chocolate, black cherry and crème de cassis.  The palate offers tobacco and coffee tones as well as cherry, currant and plum fruit flavors, with soft, silky tannins.

Glorioso 2008 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain)    $21.99 This Reserva is a deep ruby color with a garnet edge.  The bouquet is redolent of red cherry fruit with a hint of leather and spices.  On the palate, black cherry and brambly ripe berry fruit flavors are nicely uplifted by complex spice and oak tones.

Quilt 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)    $39.99 Quilt gets its name from the sourcing of its fruit: the grapes come from a patchwork of premium Napa Valley vineyards in the Oakville, St. Helena, Atlas Peak, Calistoga and Howell Mountain growing areas.  Aged in French oak for 20 months, it offers a richness and depth of flavor that is truly remarkable.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Bootleg Wine Works 2013 Bootleg Red (Napa Valley)    $42.99 Bootleg Red is sourced from premier vineyard sites throughout Napa, including the Atlas Peak, Oakville, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain and Rutherford districts.  It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.  It’s a frankly hedonistic and fabulously rich Napa red, with seemingly bottomless depth and an endless finish.

Willakenzie 2016 Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley)    $17.99 Spicy pear and lime aromas greet the nose, complemented by a subtle floral and honey character.  On the palate, juicy orchard fruit and tangy citrus flavors strike a fine balance between depth and energy. It finishes fresh and clean, with lingering pear and lime zest tones accented by a crisp mineral essence.

Novy Family Winery 2015 Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)    $24.99 Deep garnet-purple colored, Novy’s 2015 Russian River Valley Zin offers expressive blackberry, black cherry and baking spice notes with a touch of licorice.  Full-boded, concentrated and purely fruited, it offers a gorgeous velvety texture, with a delightful burst of blackberry fruit on the long finish.

Taylor Fladgate 325th Anniversary Tawny Port (Douro Valley, Portugal)    $39.99 This special limited edition Tawny was created to celebrate the company’s 325th anniversary.  Filled with rich, candied fruit flavors, it offers great depth and a fine, spicy complexity. A bright core of dried fruit is surrounded with toffee pudding and warm gingerbread notes and lifted with a hint of smoky wood.

Cheers!
