10/4/2015 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
For going on several months now, the Old Town Wine Cellar has hosted a fun event on the first Wednesday of each month that the participants like to refer to as “Wine, Women & Networking!” It’s an informal get-together of professional women here in the Yuma community who like to get together occasionally in a pleasant, informal social setting to meet new people, share information and potential business contacts and above all, enjoy some very nice wine with good friends. Everyone is welcome, but ladies especially! Things get started at about 5:30 PM, so stop by the Cellar if you can this Wednesday and join in!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Fontana Candida 2013 Frascati (Lazio, Italy) $11.99
The grapes for this refreshingly dry, clean white grow in porous volcanic soils near the city of Rome. A distinct minerality drives the nose, with scents of peach, pear, citrus peel and basil. Dominant notes of citrus and pear and a light touch of toasted almonds highlight the palate.
Villa Maria 2009 Pinot Noir (Marlborough, New Zealand) $19.99
Villa Maria’s Cellar Selection Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. The bouquet is dark and spicy. The palate displays bold, sweet fruit like redcurrant and blackberry followed by a keen, refreshing acidity at the finish.
Monte Volpe 2012 Primo Rosso (Mendocino County) $11.99
Monte Volpe’s wines are crafted exclusively with grapes of Italian origin that are deep in color and rich in both fragrance and flavor. This Italianate red blend is fruity and savory, with aromas and flavors of spicy plum and boysenberry.
Gerard Bertrand 2011 Pic Saint Loup (Coteaux du Languedoc, France) $18.99
The village of Pic Saint Loup in the Coteaux du Languedoc region of southern France is famous for the quality and terroir of its wines. Flanked by limestone cliffs, with optimal sun exposure and warm prevailing Mediterranean winds, the soils produce rich and concentrated reds with vivid flavors of ripe dark fruits and accents of thyme and spices.
Terlato & Chapoutier 2012 Shiraz-Viognier (Victoria, Australia) $19.99
A collaboration by noted Rhone Valley vintner Michel Chapoutier of France and Napa Valley’s Anthony Terlato, this Shiraz open with rich dark cherry and currant aromas, plus dark chocolate and toasty accents. Ripe berry and pomegranate flavors are carried on a silky-smooth texture.
Hess Collection 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Allomi Vineyard (Napa Valley) $26.99
This mountain-grown Napa Cabernet opens with scents of ripe plum and currant, with exotic accents of licorice and cedar. The flavors are vivid and pure, with juicy dark berry and plum fruit. Beautifully polished tannins carry it to a rich and lingering finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Buena Vista 2012 Legendary Badge (Sonoma County) $26.99
Buena Vista’s Legendary Badge is a bold blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre, Merlot and Grenache. Juicy red cherry and berry fruit flavors dominate the palate while integrated tannins give it a solid structure and deliver a vigorous, yet soft and pleasing mouthfeel.
Charles Smith 2013 Kung Fu Girl Riesling (Columbia Valley) $11.99
This opens with fragrant jasmine, honeysuckle, peach, pear and lime aromas. Juicy green apple and lime flavors strike the perfect balance of lush, ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. The finish is clean and spicy, with the zesty, refreshing minerality that makes Riesling such a great food wine.
Cantina Zaccagnini 2011 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (Abruzzo, Italy) $14.99
This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an intense ruby red in hue, with a rich bouquet of blackberries and flowers. The flavors are lavish and offer fine depth; a mix of dark cherries and plums with elements of rhubarb, cocoa and coffee. The mouthfeel is velvet soft, with mellow tannins.
Hogue Brewing Craft-Brewed Root Beer (Newport, Oregon) $3.99
Crafted with all the care that goes into Rogue’s renowned ales, and brewed with Rogue Farms’ own honey, the Rogue Craft Root Beer is a rich and delicious experience with a creamy texture, pleasing caramel richness and a rush of vanilla.
