11/25/2019 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Thanksgiving week is here! This week will be business as usual at the Old Town Wine Cellar, with the predictable exception that the Cellar will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 28th. But we will be open Friday and Saturday as usual, so be sure to make it by the Cellar to stock up on good wines (and beers) for the holiday parties and family feasts to come. And take some time while you’re here to sample this week’s selections!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Miraflores 2016 Viognier (El Dorado County) $22.99 This opens with scents of peach and pear fruit, mixing with hints of orange blossom. The aromas introduce a similar flavor profile, with a silky texture and a mouthwatering lime-zest quality. It superbly melds lush fruit with light floral tones to create a distinctively crisp and refreshing white.
Ruffino Sparkling Rosé (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) $14.99 Ruffino Sparkling Rosé is a fresh, fragrant bubbly, with bright aromas of strawberries and rose petals. In the glass it produces a stream of elegant bubbles and refreshing acidity, and alluring flavors of delicate red berries and orchard fruits that linger nicely.
Delas 2017 Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit (Rhone Valley, France) $14.99 Saint-Esprit is made with primarily Grenache grapes sourced from a small village in the southern Rhone. The vineyard’s southern exposure on steep, granitic hillsides provides a perfect growing environment. It’s a fresh and savory red, with rich fruit flavors accented by spice notes.
Masi 2015 Ripasso Campofiorin (Veneto, Italy) $15.99 Campofiorin was introduced by Masi over 50 years ago as an affordable mid-point between the pleasant fruitiness of a basic Valpolicella and the complex, raisined richness of Amarone. The fruit-filled nose is perfumed with just a hint of cinnamon. It’s soft, rich and spicy on the palate, with savory flavors of ripe red plums and berries and a pleasant hint of licorice.
Seghesio 2018 Angela’s Table Zinfandel (Sonoma County) $19.99 Angela’s Table Zinfandel has an aromatic bouquet full of plum, raspberry and blueberry, with hints of red currant and black pepper. It’s a richly spiced red with excellent structure as well as proper balancing acidity, enhanced by a pleasant touch of oak toast.
Murrieta’s Well 2017 The Spur Red Blend (Livermore Valley) $22.99 The Spur is proof that the Livermore Valley can make serious Bordeaux-styled blends. Fresh blackberry fruit pours from the glass of this elegant, dry red that prompts you to order some roast vegetables or grilled meat right now. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Syrah, plus smaller additions of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Daou Vineyards 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles) $49.99 This displays an inviting nose of ripe red cherry, currant and mulberry fragrances with hints of cocoa, coriander and mint. In the mouth, tangy blackberry, cherry and pomegranate mix with blueberry and raspberry accents, underscored with kirsch and rhubarb. Full-bodied with a silky texture, this deliciously rich wine glides to a long, generous finish.
Paul Dolan 2016 Estate Zinfandel (Mendocino County) $14.99 This Mendocino Zin exudes alluring aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum with a touch of black pepper and clove. It follows with jammy fruit from the entry through the mid-palate, finishing up with a swirl of dark raspberry fruit and a light dusting of cocoa.
Blandy’s 5 Year Old Malmsey (Madeira, Portugal) $27.99 This Malmsey is a burnished gold-amber in the glass, giving off the classic Madeira bouquet of raisins, toffee and roasted nuts with a fine lacing of honeycomb. Lush and waxy on the palate, it has honey, almond, fig paste and apricot flavors. Fresh acidity nicely balances the rich caramel, marshmallows-roasting-over-a-fire sweetness of the wine.
Cheers!
