Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This coming Saturday, December 3rd, welcome the last month of the year by embarking on a Discovery Canoe Trip on the mighty Colorado River.  Ok, it’s not that mighty by the time it gets to Yuma, but it’s still a really fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon on a beautiful late fall day in Yuma!  This guided tour departs from West Wetlands Park at noon Saturday, and it’s open to participants ages 6 and up (parents or guardian must accompany children under 16).  Cost is $20 per person.  For more info and to register (pre-registration is required; no onsite registration can be accepted), contact the City of Yuma Parks and Rec at 373-5200.

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Murrieta’s Well 2013 The Whip (Livermore Valley)    $18.99
The Whip is a tribute to the great white blends of the world – a sophisticated yet approachable blend of classic white varietals.  Fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tanks and older oak barrels, it offers lush aromas and flavors of pear, vanilla, butterscotch and orange blossom.

Iron Horse 2012 Estate Pinot Noir (Green Valley)    $19.99
The grapes for this wine come from Iron Horse estate vineyards in the Green Valley section of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. It opens with a lovely bouquet of black raspberries, cherries, anise and cedar.  A juicy core of black cherry fruit is enhanced by complex elements of spices and earth.

Vega Tolosa 2012 11 Pinos Old Vine Bobal (Manchuela, Spain)    $9.99
Vega Tolosa has been owned and operated by the Tolosa family since 1905.  This wine, made from the native Bobal varietal, is from vines over 80 years old.  Plum jam and red cherry fruit emerges on the nose, along with savory hints of pungent herbs. Gentle acidity gives a welcome lift to the jammy flavors of cherry, plum and red currant.

Poderi di San Pietro 2013 Rosso di Valbissera (Piedmont, Italy)    $17.99
Rosso di Valbissera is a Piedmontese blend of Barbera, Croatina and Uva Rara, all native grapes of the region. The wine is a classic northern Italian red, with a savory melding of black cherry and plum fruit and complex notes of earth, wood smoke and spice.

Domaine Napa 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)    $19.99
This elegantly crafted and finely balanced Napa Cabernet opens with blueberry and cassis aromas, along with notes of spice, cedar and vanilla.  Rich black fruit flavors mingle on the silky palate, and a delicate accent of eucalyptus lingers at the finish.

El Enemigo 2012 Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $24.99
Deep purple in color, El Enemigo offers an expressive perfume of balsam wood, old leather, spice-box tones and black cherry fruit. It’s big and bold, yet very smooth-textured on the palate, with lush dark fruit and savory spice flavors plus a long, fruit-filled finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Tenuta Sette Ponti 2013 Crognolo (Tuscany, Italy)    $29.99
A refined, stylish Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, this opens with aromas of crushed berries and roasted coffee beans, then shows a concentrated palate of ripe black cherry and plum, accented by hints of saddle leather and toasted vanilla beans. Superbly balanced and integrated tannins give this a polished texture.

Willakenzie 2015 Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley)    $18.99
This is a vibrant and delicious Pinot Gris with a fine mineral edge. A fragrant nose of ripe Bosc pears, peaches and orange blossom, reminiscent of a fragrant citrus grove, leads into a flavorful palate of lush white peach and citrus zest.  The wine is juicy, rich and elegant, with crisp acidity.

Ferreira Dona Antónia Reserve Tawny Port (Douro Valley, Portugal)    $21.99
Dona Antónia is a beautiful red color, with a tawny edge. The bouquet is intense and rich, with super-ripe plum and apricot fruit and exotic floral notes.  It’s lush and sweet in the mouth, showing accents of red currant, orange peel and maple syrup.  A luscious finish offers notes of walnut and hazelnut.

Cheers!
