Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

 

This Saturday, November 12th, the Old Town Wine Cellar will present another of our monthly Saturday Afternoon Beer Tastings.  We’ll start at noon and go until 6 PM, with a selection of great American craft beers and imported brews available to sample for just a $5 tasting fee.  It’s the best deal in town, and a great way to spend part of a nice cool fall afternoon in Yuma.  We hope to see you down here!

 

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

 

Pieropan 2014 Soave (Veneto, Italy)    $14.99
This Soave is a blend of native grapes, 85% Garganega and 15% Trebbiano.  A lively, tangy white, it’s marked by a distinct minerality and shows appealing flavors of star fruit, pear, blood orange and ginger, ending with a crisp, stony finish.

 

Etude 2014 Lyric Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County)    $17.99
Etude has produced acclaimed Pinots in the Carneros region of Napa Valley for over 30 years, and now apply their proven skill with the varietal to the Santa Barbara County appellation. Their Lyric bottling is a fine rendition, offering a core of ripe black cherry fruit enhanced by hints of red raspberry and tart cranberry.

 

Cercius 2012 Côtes du Rhône (Rhone Valley, France)    $14.99
A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, this wine aged for 6 months in concrete tanks. It offers a delicious mix of red raspberry fruit, licorice, spice and Provencal herbs as well as a soft, silky, textured feel on the palate. From vines that are up to 90 years old, this is un-fined and unfiltered, a quintessential Côtes du Rhône.

 

Brancaia 2013 TRE (Tuscany, Italy)    $19.99
This Tuscan blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot opens with hints of violets, spiced fruits and herbs.  The palate is distinguished by an excellent balance of black cherry and plum fruit balanced by firm tannins.

 

Monte Xanic 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (Valle de Guadelupe, Mexico)    $23.99
Monte Xanic has produce fine wines in Baja California’s Valle de Guadelupe for over 25 years, with Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals the main area of emphasis. This Cabernet was aged in French oak for 18 months, and offers a complex and savory Baja character.

 

Titus Vineyards 2013 Estate Zinfandel (Napa Valley)    $32.99
This Napa Zin exudes aromas of juicy, briary dark fruit wrapped in exotic spice.  The palate follows with ripe black cherry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit plus a dash of pepper.  The mouthfeel is rich and full-bodied, with a spicy finish enhanced by vanilla, licorice and toast accents from 14 months aging in American oak.

 

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

 

Bench 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley)    $18.99
This Sonoma Cabernet offers scents of bright cherry, currant and raspberry, plus hints of toasted oak and vanilla.  In the glass, flavors of wild berry and plum mingle on a lingering finish.  Polished tannins, a moderate palate weight and balanced acidity make it very easy to drink.

 

Tilia 2013 Bonarda (Mendoza, Argentina)    $11.99
The Bonarda grape of Argentina is known as Charbono in California.  This varietal originated in France, but is now virtually extinct there.  Ripe aromas of dark fruits and hints of violet and anise give way to a juicy mouthful of black cherry and dark  plum edged with a dash of black pepper.

 

Beringer 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)    $34.99
Beringer’s 2011 Napa Cabernet wraps around the palate with dark cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spices.  Rich, round and seamless, this vintage offers intensity and breadth.  Menthol, licorice and espresso notes expand on a juicy and inviting finish.
