Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

The shopping days before Christmas are becoming less and less. In two short weeks the holiday will be upon us, and the odds are you haven’t gotten around to completing all your Christmas shopping. So here’s my annual pitch for the Old Town Wine Cellar as your Holiday gift-giving backstop. A nice bottle of wine (or a Wine Cellar Gift Certificate) makes a great and very easy gift for friends and family. So stop by soon before time runs out, and cross some more items off your Christmas shopping list. And sample some great wines while you’re here!

Daou Vineyards 2020 Bodyguard Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) $29.99

Bodyguard is a quintessential California Chard, with abundant ripe tropical fruit flavors, vanilla-laced oak tones and an all-around rich, buttery texture. The nose has aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and coconut and the flavors range from mango and pineapple to butter and crème brûlée.

The Cloudline offers scents of sweet Oregon blackberries and Rainier cherries, plus hints of cedar forest and a faint note of rose petal. The palate offers rich, vivid flavors of freshly picked wild berries and exotic Asian spices, yet the wine displays elegance and balance.

Paul Buisse 2019 Chinon (Loire River Valley, France) $17.99

This Cabernet Franc begins with an enticing aroma full of bright, ripe berry fruit along with hints of dry herbs. The palate is focused on juicy red fruit flavors, with light spice and herbal accents. With soft tannins and balanced acidity, this is very easy to drink. It finishes long and dry.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2018 Indian Wells Merlot (Columbia Valley) $18.99

Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Indian Wells Merlot shows elegance, concentration and smooth tannins. 2018, one of the warmest growing seasons in the Columbia Valley and earliest harvests ever, added a layer of rich ripe black cherry fruit with an opulent mouth-feel and a fine, silky texture.

Trivento 2019 Golden Reserve Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $22.99

The Trivento Golden Reserve offers vivid aromas of black cherry, blackberry, black olives, violets and fennel. The palate is smooth and plush, with layers of cherry, fig and raspberry fruit flavors followed by cocoa, cedar and licorice notes on a muscular finish.

Masi 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Costasera (Veneto, Italy) $59.99

Masi’s Costasera has a fragrant bouquet of black currants, blackberries, vanilla and toasted almonds. It’s rich and warm in the mouth with delicious flavors of ripe, raisined fruit accented by a spicy cinnamon and baking spice edge. A soft and silky texture frames the savory finish.

This lush and alluring Sauvignon Blanc offers aromas of lemon verbena, candied pineapple, lime and sweet melon. On the palate it is silky and mouth-filling, with a refreshing acidity that frames ripe, tantalizing citrus and tropical fruit, carrying the wine to a long and focused finish.

Cline Cellars 2020 Old Vine Zinfandel (Contra Costa County) $17.99

Cline 100th Anniversary Edition Old Vine Zin is a smooth and rich easy-drinker. Reserved tannins with mild acidity put all the focus on a lush mouthfeel that showcases the wine’s juicy strawberry and red raspberry fruit, and its spicy coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate character.

Modern Times Brewing Submersible City Coconut Stout (San Diego) $4.99
