12/13/2021 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
There’s just one full week left before we hit Christmas week, so this is prime time for getting your Christmas and holiday shopping taken care of. The Old Town Wine Cellar will be happy to help – we have lots and lots of great wines that would make perfect, and very easy gifts. And don’t forget Wine Cellar Gift Certificates. They’re a lot easier than trying to figure out which particular wine to buy, and they don’t weigh down the stocking near as much! So be sure to swing by Historic Downtown this week and get some more of your Christmas shopping taken care of before time slips away. And you can enjoy some nice wines while you’re here…
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK
Schlumberger 2019 Pinot Blanc Les Princes Abbes (Alsace, France) $18.99
Bright, fresh aromas of kiwi fruit, lemon zest and pear, accented by a background hint of green apple mix on the nose of this Alsatian Pinot Blanc. Ripe tropical fruit and nectarine highlight the vibrant flavors. The lithe palate combines superb balance with a crisp finish.
Cambria 2018 Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley) $19.99
Julia’s Vineyard was planted in 1991 in the heart of the Santa Maria bench of northern Santa Barbara County. This is classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot, offering a bright beam of black cherry, strawberry and pomegranate fruit. An underlying savory quality balances the sweet fruit with a spicy backdrop.
Masi 2018 Ripasso Campofiorin (Veneto, Italy) $15.99
Campofiorin was introduced by Masi over 50 years ago as an affordable mid-point between the pleasant fruitiness of a basic Valpolicella and the complex, raisined richness of Amarone. The fruit-filled nose is perfumed with just a hint of cinnamon. It’s rich and spicy on the palate, with savory flavors of ripe red plums and berries and a pleasant hint of licorice.
Torres 2015 Altos Ibéricos Crianza (Rioja, Spain) $17.99
Torres’ Altos Ibéricos Crianza is ruby red, with a garnet edge. The nose is redolent of ripe dark fruit plus scents of spice and leather. On the palate, bright dark cherry and brambly wild berry fruit is edged with complex baking spice and toast accents.
Ken Wright Cellars 2016 Tyrus Evan Syrah (Walla Walla Valley) $24.99
Ken Wright’s ‘Tyrus Evan’ is a world-class Syrah, made with fruit sourced from the renowned Seven Hills Vineyard in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley AVA. Plush, dark flavors of cocoa, cassis, black currant and boysenberry are accented by the classic Syrah spicy/earthy character.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
Caymus 2019 Grand Durif Petite Sirah (Suisun Valley) $39.99
Grand Durif is a big, black, juicy Petite Sirah that overflows with notes of toasted herbs, deep boysenberry fruit and dark plums, alongside tobacco, black cherry and baking spice accents. The style of this wine is absolutely full throttle and no holds barred – rich, ripe, and begging for a rare prime rib…
Daou Vineyards 2020 Bodyguard Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) $29.99
Bodyguard is a quintessential California Chard, with abundant ripe tropical fruit flavors, vanilla-laced oak tones and an all-around rich, buttery texture. The nose has aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and coconut and the flavors range from mango and pineapple to butter and crème brûlée.
M. Chapoutier 2019 Côtes du Rhone Belleruche (Rhone Valley, France) $13.99
Chapoutier’s Belleruche offers classic Côtes du Rhone character, with concentrated aromas of ripe cherries, candied orange peel, licorice and pepper. The palate is forward and supple, with sweet red and black cherry fruit, peppery spice and a savory touch of dried herbs on the finish.
Samuel Smith India Ale (Yorkshire, England) $5.99
This is a classic malt-accented, copper-hued English India Pale Ale, with subtle fruity esters from Samuel Smith’s proprietary yeast strain intermixing with the light caramel character obtained from organic crystal malts, with plenty of fresh hops added.
Cheers!
