12/12/2016 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Less than two weeks worth of shopping days left before Christmas. Wine makes the perfect (and very easy) gift, so be sure to stop by the Wine Cellar sometime in the interim and pick up some holiday cheer for the folks you care most about (just those over 21, of course!). And I want to let everyone know that Chef Eddie Guzman of FreshTaste Catering will be in the Cellar this Friday, December 16th between 5 and 7PM to provide some gustatory accompaniments to the usual great lineup of wines. Hope to see you here!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler 2011 Riesling Kabinett (Mosel Valley, Germany) $24.99
This Riesling offers enticing aromas of ripe apricot, peach, pear along with floral accents on the nose. The palate is creamy and layered, imparting a complex, savory quality to the medley of apple, citrus and pear fruit. An underlying spine of mineral notes and a tangy, crisp acidity frame the buoyant finish.
il Molino de Grace 2010 il Volano (Tuscany, Italy) $12.99
This Tuscan blend of 75% Sangiovese and 25% Merlot shows a perfect mix of ripe fruit and rustic Italian character. Red cherry and red raspberry fruit is enlivened by elements of licorice and spice on the balanced tannic frame, supported with food-friendly acidity.
J. Lohr 2014 South Ridge Syrah (Paso Robles) $15.99
Sourced from the sunny south-facing slopes of J. Lohr’s South Ridge Vineyard in Paso Robles, the grapes very easily achieved full ripeness, resulting in a Syrah that’s bursting with rich dark fruit flavors and subtle spices.
Chateau Puech-Haut 2012 Prestige Rouge (Languedoc, France) $17.99
The Prestige Rouge mixes Grenache sourced from 80 year-old vines with Syrah from vines up to 45 years of age. Fermented and aged only in concrete, it’s a dense and powerful red, perfectly capturing the warm character of the Mediterranean with floral accents of dark fruits, spices, cracked pepper and garrigue.
Shannon Ridge 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lake County) $22.99
Shannon Ridge 2012 Home Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is a vivid crimson in color. The nose offers aromas of blackberry, raspberry, mocha and toasty vanilla. The flavors are a mix of ripe black cherry and blackberry, with a subtle accent of cedar. The texture is full bodied and rich.
Hartford Family 2013 Old Vine Zinfandel (Russian River Valley) $34.99
This was sourced from old-vine, dry-farmed and low-yielding Zinfandel vineyards having an average age of more than a century. It’s a wine with fine depth of flavor and intensity. Aromas of fresh raspberry and boysenberry are balanced by cracked pepper and spice. Brambly blackberry, nutmeg and chocolate flavors lead into an elegant and silky finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Michael David Vineyards 2013 Earthquake Cabernet Sauvignon (Lodi) $24.99
Earthquake Cabernet shows outstanding concentration and flavors that are deep and rich in a bold, full-bodied and mouthfilling wine. The palate is saturated with blackcurrant, sweet blackberry and dark cherry fruit flavors, and a veneer of fine-grained tannins adds polish to a lengthy finish.
J. Lohr 2014 Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley) $19.99
Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 11 acres of the 34 acre Carol’s Vineyard, planted in the vineyard’s eastern section next to the Napa River. The soils are loamy and well-drained, with a substantial degree of gravel. The 2014 is a pale straw yellow in color, with youthful green hues. The aromas and flavors offer a vibrant mix of juicy grapefruit, kiwi, lime, fig and passionfruit, with a keen mineral edge.
Napa Cellars 2013 Merlot (Napa Valley) $18.99
Napa Cellars Merlot has a ripe and juicy core of blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit. Firm and dry yet elegantly styled, it shows elements of rich spice that accent the fruit and add complexity. The round, soft finish shows a light accent of vanilla.
Mission Brewing Plunder IPA (San Diego) $7.99
Plunder is a premium IPA, first brewed in 2014 and now a regular part of Mission’s lineup. It uses nine different hops to create huge tropical fruit accents, with resinous hints of mango and grapefruit. Then the rich malt backbone kicks in and really rounds out this beer, finishing balanced and fresh
Cheers!
