Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Just one week to go until Christmas – it’s time to really hone in on those last minute gift ideas.  A nice bottle of wine (or a great craft or import beer) makes a great option in that regard, or alternatively a Wine Cellar Gift Certificate might be the perfect (and very easy) choice.  Just stop by the Cellar this week and we can help you select the perfect gift bottle and mark another task off your to-do list. And enjoy a glass of wine while you’re at it!  One last note: as Christmas Day falls on Sunday this year, there will be no change to the normal Wine Cellar business hours for the week, so we will be open all our normal hours through 6 PM, Saturday the 24th.  I hope to see you sometime this week, and if not, Merry Christmas from the Old Town Wine Cellar!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

J. Lohr 2014 Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)    $19.99
Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 11 acres of the 34 acre Carol’s Vineyard, next to the Napa River. The soils are loamy and well-drained, with a substantial degree of gravel. The 2014 is a pale straw yellow in color, with youthful green hues. The aromas and flavors offer a vibrant mix of juicy grapefruit, kiwi, lime, fig and passionfruit, with a keen mineral edge.

Bench 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)    $18.99
This Pinot blends fruit from Carneros and Russian River Valley.  The Russian River element – while smaller – is well reflected in the bright cherry and dark berry fruit on the nose and the palate.  Alluring hints of crushed flower blossoms along with notes of earthy, sweet spices give complexity to a silky texture and a fine, lingering finish.

The Federalist 2014 Honest Red (Mendocino, Napa & Sonoma County)    $14.99
The Federalist Honest Red is a mix of 55% Merlot, 30% Zinfandel and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, sourced from premium growing regions in Northern California.  The wine offers a soft and round mouthfeel with a medley of rich dark fruit flavors and a lightly spicy finish.

Napa Cellars 2013 Merlot (Napa Valley)    $18.99
Napa Cellars Merlot has a ripe and juicy core of blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit.  Firm and dry yet elegantly styled, it shows elements of rich spice that accent the fruit and add complexity.  The round, soft finish shows a light accent of vanilla.

Ferrari Carano 2014 Siena (Sonoma County)    $19.99

Siena begins with rich black cherry aromas, plus subtle hints of fennel and licorice. Ripe red fruit flavors follow the nose, shaped by a pleasant acidity and soft tannins. Tart cherry pie flavors linger at the finish, accented by a touch of chocolate on a long, pleasing finish

Hess Collection 2012 Mt. Veeder 19 Block Cuvée (Napa Valley)    $34.99
This is named for the 19 vineyard blocks on the Hess Veeder Summit Vineyard, located 2,000 feet above the Napa Valley floor. It’s a fleshy and concentrated red, with ample tannins and rich black cherry, wild berry and cassis flavors. 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Alejandro Fernandez 2013 Tinto Pesquera Crianza (Ribera del Duero, Spain)    $34.99
This Tempranillo opens with deeply scented tones of ripe dark berries and plum, complemented by hints of cedar and roasted coffee. The palate shows outstanding depth, offering layers of ripe black plum and currant fruit flavors on a solid, gripping tannic frame.

Cascina Bongiovanni 2012 Barbera d’Alba (Piedmont, Italy)    $22.99
This is a traditionally styled Barbera that offers complex opening tones of vanilla, caramel and coffee from aging in small French oak barrels. The savory yet dry palate offers dark cherry and plum fruit flavors, with notes of spice and smoke.

Ancient Peaks 2014 Merlot (Paso Robles)    $17.99
This Paso Merlot delivers rich dark fruit aromas with intriguing notes of cedar, mocha and eucalyptus. The palate is juicy and round, with flavors of dark cherry, red raspberry, vanilla and light spices.  Firm tannins and balanced acidity take this to the next level, a wine with superb refinement and polish.

Ayinger Jahrhundert Bier (Bavaria, Germany)    $5.99
Ayinger’s Jahrhundert Bier is a classic Bavarian lager. The beer combines its basic maltiness with just enough hops to give it a pleasant, citrusy bite.  This is a solid and eminently drinkable beer that evokes the wonderful sensation of biting into a freshly-baked, crusty piece of bread.

Cheers!
