12/26/2017 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
2018 is almost here, and I’d like to express my profound appreciation to all of my customers and friends here in the Yuma area who have supported the Old Town Wine Cellar for all these years (we’re just now completing Year 15!). I look forward to many more years here in Historic Downtown Yuma, bringing the best wines and craft beers that I can find to this great community. If I don’t see you before then, then let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Fess Parker 2016 Riesling (Santa Barbara County) $12.99 This is a refreshing, off-dry style of Riesling with luscious, ultra-ripe peach, apricot and melon aromas and flavors. Balancing the richness of all that fruit is a streak of keen acidity that frames a bright and zesty finish.
Pali 2016 Riviera Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) $19.99 Riviera is made with grapes sourced from two vineyards in the Sonoma Coast AVA: Pali’s own estate in the southern section of the AVA and another vineyard in the Russian River Valley. It was fermented in small lots and then barrel-aged in 30% new French oak for eight months.
14 Hands 2016 Run Wild Red (Columbia Valley) $11.99 Juicy and fruit-forward, the 14 Hands Run Wild Red showcases a vibrant blend of varietals with flavors of ripe blueberry, black currant and black raspberry. Soft tannins and lively acidity make this wine delicious just by the glass!
Château de Lascaux 2014 Coteaux du Languedoc (Languedoc, France) $17.99 This red absolutely sings of southern France. The nose is redolent with violets, dried herbs, cassis and raspberries. The palate is smooth and enticing, offering black cherry, raspberry and currant fruit flavors, accented by hints of violets, herbs and earth. It ends on a bright, persistent finish with a kick of peppery spice.
Podernuovo a Palazzone 2011 Therra (Tuscany, Italy) $22.99 Therra is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Montepulciano. The result is a complex and satisfying Tuscan red with a vividly fruity character of dark cherry, blackberry and currant, along with intriguing hints of spice, tobacco and cedar. A hint of balsamic accents the lingering finish.
Rutherford Hill 2014 Merlot (Napa Valley) $27.99 From one of Napa’s true specialists with this varietal, this is a complex and well-structured Merlot. Beautifully perfumed plum and black cherry fruit flavors are polished and rich, offering fine intensity, depth and length. Smooth and supple tannins support the long, elegant finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Austin Hope 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles) $49.99 Deep ruby in color, this expresses aromas of fresh-picked black currants, black cherries and blackberries, with notes of violets and mocha. On the palate, it’s a big, powerful, modern-styled wine layered with heaps of juicy berry and cherry fruit and nuances of cedar, clove, nutmeg and vanilla bean that round out a beautifully smooth, long finish.
Oberon 2015 Chardonnay (Los Carneros) $17.99 Oberon Chardonnay is fresh and vibrant, with a full-bodied mix of tangerine, lime, nectarine and pear lavors that are juicy, layered and cleansing. This has enough creamy oak to add a satisfying measure of richness, but the emphasis is on a focused and pure core of ripe orchard fruits.
Andis 2013 Painted Fields Red (Amador County) $18.99 Painted Fields is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot. It has a nose of ripe, fresh-picked fruit, mixed with hints of savory kitchen herbs and spices. The palate is all about fresh, ripe wild berry and cherry fruit, accented by notes of cocoa, cinnamon and crushed peppercorns.
Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout Maple-Bourbon Barrel Aged (Michigan) $25.99 CBS was born when Founders happened upon some bourbon barrels that previously housed maple syrup. They opted to put the same base beer as the renowned KBS, an imperialized version of Breakfast Stout in the maple barrels, and after one taste knew they had something special. Rich and velvety maple syrup, espresso and dark chocolate blend together in what can only be described as a transcendental beer drinking experience…
Cheers!
