Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

2016 is almost upon us, and therefore once again it’s time to offer my heartfelt thanks to all of my great customers and friends here in the Yuma area that have supported the Old Town Wine Cellar through the years.  Next week marks a lucky 13 years of doing business here in Historic Downtown, and it’s been a wonderful experience from the get-go.  The Wine Cellar will be here for many years to come, bringing the best wines and beers we can find to a community that I’m truly happy to have become a part of.  And one last note for the final week of 2015:  the Wine Cellar will close at 5 PM on Thursday, New Year’s Eve and we will be closed Friday, New Year’s Day.  Otherwise we’ll be open our normal hours, so be sure to stop by if you need some bubbly or other libations to help celebrate the turn of the calendar.  Best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2016!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING (Tuesday through Thursday):

Mulderbosch 2011 Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch, South Africa)    $14.99
Abundant citrus and tropical fruit scents follow through to the lively palate of this alluring South African Chenin Blanc.  It offers luscious flavors of pineapple, citrus and melon fruit plus delicate floral accents, along with spice tones from a light degree of oak aging.

J. Lohr 2012 Fog’s Reach Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)    $29.99
Fog’s Reach Vineyard is situated in a cool, windy enclave of the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County.  The 2012 vintage offers strawberry, fennel and white tea aromas.  The prevalence of Dijon clone 667 in the vineyard imparts savory and complex dark fruit flavors to the palate, with sandalwood notes on the finish.

Cosentino 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lodi)    $12.99
Cosentino’s 2012 ‘The Cab’ is bright crimson in color, with sage and currants on the nose.  It’s medium bodied, with youthful red fruit flavors of cherries and pomegranates accented by savory spice notes that come in at the finish.

Poderi di San Pietro 2013 Rosso di Valbissera (Piedmont, Italy)    $17.99
Rosso di Valbissera is a Piedmontese blend of Barbera, Croatina, and Uva Rara, all native grapes of the region. It’s a classic northern Italian red, with a savory melding of black cherry and plum fruit and complex notes of earth, wood smoke and spice.

Palacios Remondo 2011 La Montesa (Rioja, Spain)    $18.99
A blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Mazuelo, La Montesa opens with scents of ripe red fruits along with light notes of vanilla and toasty oak.  The mouthfeel is smooth and silky, with rich flavors of dark plum and cherry and a touch of licorice.

Amavi Cellars 2011 Syrah (Walla Walla Valley)    $29.99
This Washington Syrah opens with bright red currant, plum and spice-box aromas.  In the mouth it’s velvety and round, showing a solid tannic structure and enough snappy acidity to balance its rich fruit core all the way through a long finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Silverado Vineyards 2009 Sangiovese (Napa Valley)    $22.99
The ‘09 vintage is full of bright berry fruit, crushed raspberry in the aroma and wild berry flavors on the palate. Lively acidity is true to the varietal, and it balances the rich flavors associated with Sangiovese, finishing with a blast of fresh cherry fruit.

MacMurray Ranch 2013 Pinot Gris (Russian River Valley)    $14.99
Spicy pear and lime aromas greet the nose, complemented by a subtle floral and honey character.  On the palate, juicy orchard fruit and crisp citrus flavors strike a fine balance between depth and energy. It finishes fresh and clean, with lingering pear and lime zest tones accented by a crisp mineral essence.

Beaulieu Vineyard 2013 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)    $27.99
This Cabernet fills the senses with deep and fully ripe blackberry, cassis and black cherry aromas and flavors, edged by hints of violet, tobacco and old leather.  The wine expands across the palate in broad, rich flavors, with a firm structure of polished tannins. Hints of spice and cedar linger on the intense finish.

Lagunitas Imperial PILS (Petaluma, California)    $5.99
The Lagunitas Imperial PILS is an amped-up style of Pilsener, sure to be unlike any other Pilsener you’ve ever encountered. The ABV is higher, the body is much heftier and hops are a lot more in evidence in this deliciously different California take on a classic beer.

Cheers!
