Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This week brings the official beginning of summer according to the calendar, but of course the locals here in Yuma are well aware that summer actually arrived a good while back in these parts. There’s a solid three months plus to go, so we’d all just better make the best of it. And part of that would be regular visits to the Old Town Wine Cellar here in Historic Downtown. Great wines to enjoy in a nice, cool place, and a number of other great establishments to check out while you’re down here. So keep that in mind, and do your best to enjoy another long Yuma summer. We hope to see you soon!

FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK

Hyland Estates 2021 Old Vine Riesling (Willamette Valley) $19.99

This is the 50th vintage from the acclaimed Hyland Vineyard in Oregon’s McMinnville AVA. On the nose, fragrant aromas of citrus zest, mandarin, orange blossom and vanilla bean mingle. Racy notes of peach and Meyer lemon enliven the palate, with a vibrant acidity and tingling minerality.

Villa Cerna 2016 Chianti Classico Primocolle (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99

Villa Cerna 2016 Chianti Classico Primocolle is a deep ruby red, opening on a dark cherry, floral and sweet-spice-filled bouquet. On the palate, a core of pure black cherry, raspberry and black currant fruit is supported by a firm, elegant tannic structure, coming to a rich and a savory finish.

Michael David 2019 Old Vine Zinfandel (Lodi) $14.99

This Lodi Zin exudes aromas of sweet vanilla, fennel and ripe blueberries and boysenberries. It’s lush and juicy on the palate, overflowing with ripe, brambly wild berry fruit flavors that culminate in a long finish with spice and peppery notes.

Les Légendes 2019 Cabernet-Merlot (Bordeaux, France) $18.99

Les Légendes ‘R’ is among a collection of wines introduced by Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) that provide immediate charm and drinkability without needing to be cellared. DBR’s technical advisors work closely with growers to ensure that the wines will meet the high standards necessary to merit the famed ‘DBR’ emblem on the label.

Marques de Riscal 2016 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $24.99

Riscal Rioja Reserva is deep ruby in the glass, offering a nose of ripe cherries and violets with hints of spice and vanilla. Rich dark fruit flavors with exotic touches of leather and spices predominate on the palate, perfectly framed with firm tannins.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS

Lanson Brut Champagne Le Black Label (Reims, France) $59.99

Lanson’s Le Black Label Brut is balanced, generous and refined. A rich, mineral-accented bouquet evokes jasmine, lime and chalk. The palate is racy and dry, with strong citrus zest and pear flavors and a deliciously toasty, mineral-tinged finish.

Firestone Vineyards 2019 Estate Merlot (Santa Ynez Valley) $20.99

On the nose this offers generous notes of cassis, cedar, and mocha. On the palate, rich flavors of roasted dark plums and red currants are laced with complex notes of dark chocolate and espresso. The finish is lengthy and elegant, with a subtle herb character that adds an intriguing element.

Tangent 2020 Albariño (Edna Valley) $16.99

Made in the traditional style of Rías Baixas Albariño but with a Pacific Ocean twist, this wine is full of crisp vibrancy. Aromatics of guaa and citrus peel jump from the glass. A clean yet round mouthfeel is beautifully balanced, with juicy white peach and zesty grapefruit flavors that culminate in a refreshing finish.

Modern Times Brewing Star Jungle Hazy Pilsner (San Diego) $4.99

This delightfully hoppy pils is brewed with generous amounts of Nelson and Mosaic hops over a delicate malt backbone. The result is an adult beverage that’s bursting with ripe fruit aromas underscored with just enough sweet malts to balance the hops.

Cheers!
