Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Welcome to August! It’s a bit too early to say summer is winding down here in Yuma, but we are making solid progress. And the onset of August will bring First Friday here in Historic Downtown, specifically Friday, August 6^th. Retail stores and assorted other businesses will remaining open at least until 8:00PM, and of course all our downtown eating & drinking establishments will be going strong. The Wine Cellar will certainly be among them; the official closing time for the Cellar is 7:00PM but we are certain to be still pouring wine and welcoming customers at 8PM and beyond on any given Friday. So consider venturing downtown this coming Friday, and don’t hesitate to stop in at the Wine Cellar when you do!
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK
Beni di Batasiolo 2019 Gavi (Piedmont, Italy) $17.99
Gavi comes from a small growing area in northwest Italy, near Genoa on the steep slopes of the Apennines. Made from the native Cortese varietal, this has a savory palate of white peach, green apple, sage and a hint of toasted almonds, framed with bright acidity. A mineral edge frames the finish.
Diora 2018 La Petite Grace Pinot Noir (Monterey County) $18.99
Aromas of black cherry, brown sugar and mocha set the stage for a robust palate of concentrated fruit flavors, with a textured mouthfeel anchored by Pinot Noir’s signature balanced acidity. The lingering finish gives a lasting impression of rich black fruit with a pleasant touch of toasted oak.
Tangley Oaks 2015 Merlot (Mendocino County) $14.99
Inviting plum and red berry fruit aromas are intermingled with cocoa and savory herbs on the nose. Supple red fruit and juicy tannins on the front-palate lead to spicy cherry and blackberry jam flavors that unfold into a rich and lasting finish.
Palacios Remondo 2016 La Montesa (Rioja, Spain) $19.99
The La Montesa is 92% Garnacha and 8% Tempranillo, sourced from the Palacios Remondo estate vineyards. It opens with aromas of ripe red fruits and light notes of vanilla and toasted oak. The palate is smooth and silky, with dark plum and cherry flavors plus a hint of licorice.
Seghesio 2018 Zinfandel (Sonoma County) $22.99
Seghesion Zinfandel has an aromatic bouquet full of plum, raspberry and blueberry, with hints of red currant and black pepper. It’s a richly spiced red with excellent structure as well as proper balancing acidity, enhanced by a pleasant touch of oak toast.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
La Nerthe 2018 Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Cassagnes (Rhone Valley, France) $21.99
Power, structure and color are the signatures of this Côtes du Rhône. In appearance, it’s a deep crimson with violet hints. On the nose, vivid scents of red and black fruits along with floral and spice notes emerge. On the palate it’s fleshy and round, with a pleasing warmth.
Licia 2020 Albariño (Rías Baixas, Spain) $19.99
This crisp, dry and wonderfully tangy native Spanish white offers delicate notes of citrus, dried flowers and herbs. Vividly pure white peach, pear, citrus and tropical fruit flavors mingle on the palate. A fresh, lively acidity carries it to a clean, mouthwatering finish.
Baladin Nazionale Pale Ale (Piozzo, Italy) $5.99
Baladin Nazionale is made with 100% Italian ingredients. This beer shows a deep amber in the glass, with a subtle hazy appearance and a fine, persistent head. The delicate aromas and flavors give the perfect balance among all of the beer’s abundantly fruity, herbaceous and malty components.
Cheers!
