Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Believe it or not, summer is kind of winding down. This Friday, August 12^th will bring the second-to-the-last performance in the 2021 Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series, just a little ways down Main Street at Lutes’ Casino. The regulars with the Yuma Jazz Company will be joined by guest vocalist Jennifer Wayman-Hart, who has performed locally with the Arizona Western College Jazz Band as well as the Yuma Big Band. As always, the show will go from 7 to 9 PM with no cover. It’s a fine evening’s entertainment on a late-summer evening here in Historic Downtown; after of course enjoying a glass or two of wine at the Cellar…

FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK

Quatro Mani 2018 Falanghina del Sannio (Campania, Italy) $16.99

Quatro Mani’s Falanghina del Sannio is wonderfully fresh, as a dusting of minerals give way to citrus-infused pear and floral notes. In the mouth a soft, silky texture floods the senses with ripe yellow apples and hints of sweet spice. The finish resonates with bright orchard fruits, a saline-and-mineral character and a buzz of residual acids.

Bieler Père et Fils 2019 Côtes du Rhône La Jassine (Rhone Valley, France) $15.99

This blend of the classic Rhone varietals Grenache and Syrah has a nose of dark cherry fruit and spice aromas, framed by the classic Provence notes of rosemary, thyme and sage. A lavish palate of dark berry fruit with a snap of spicy licorice is nicely supported by soft, round tannins.

Clos de Los Siete 2018 Red Blend (Valle de Uco, Argentina) $18.99

This Malbec-dominated blend is a deep red in the glass, shot through with purple glints. On the nose, an intense and complex aromatic expression exudes notes of blueberries, lavender and spice. In the mouth, tannins are assertive yet ripe, framing a fruit-filled palate that’s juicy, caressing and refined.

Penfolds Max’s 2018 Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon (South Australia) $19.99

This deep magenta-hued blend of 64% Shiraz and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a nose of blackberry and powdered earth. White pepper graces its inky espresso structure, inching its way through bold notes of plum and beetroot. Violets chime in mid-palate, while a meaty grilled sensation is spiced to the “max” on the finish.

Zenato 2016 Valpolicella Ripassa (Veneto, Italy) $32.99

This Ripassa opens with aromas of juicy black plums and coffee-scented spice. In the mouth, a ripe core of juicy currant and black plum fruit is accented with elements of spice and toasted oak. It’s a rich and mouth-filling red, with fruit-drenched tannins and a lingering, spicy finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS

Paso Hills 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles) $16.99

Mark Brédif 2020 Vouvray (Loire Valley, France) $22.99

This Chenin Blanc offers a fine nose of fully-ripe yellow fruits like peaches and pears, along with added hints of citrus and pineapple. In the mouth it’s nicely rich, balanced by a lemony acidity and coming to a long and refreshing finish.

Modern Times Brewing Dinosaur Getaway Hazy IPA (San Diego) $4.99

Laden with Citra, Amarillo and Centennial hops, this hazy miracle of the brewing arts s a swirling vortex of pineapple and fresh citrus, underscored by enough fresh pine notes to make for an utterly lovely drinking experience!
