Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Summer keeps rolling along here in Yuma, but the days are getting a bit shorter now and it’s getting just a tad cooler, especially after the sun goes down. Speaking of cool, the Old Town Wine Cellar is still about the coolest place in town, in more ways than one. So whenever you’d like to cool down a bit from our still darn hot summer, and enjoy some great wine or a cold glass of craft beer in the bargain, just head for Historic Downtown Yuma and stop in at the Wine Cellar. Hope to see you soon!
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK
Harken 2019 California Chardonnay $14.99
100% barrel-fermented with full malolactic fermentation, this was aged seven months in a mix of American and French oak. The result is a delicious medley of crème brulée and buttered toast notes along with ripe Bosc pear and tropical fruit flavors.
Bodegas Iranzo 2019 Spartico (Utiel-Requena, Spain) $12.99
Spartico is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from certified organic vineyards. The wine truly captures the pure expression of the grapes, without the use of any additives including sulfites, and it’s completely un-oaked. It’s fruit-filled and juicy with a smooth, soft mouthfeel, but still plenty of tannic grip.
Giguiere Estate 2019 Pillars of Hercules (Dunnigan Hills) $17.99
A chewy, dense, full-bodied blend for those seeking a really big red. This blend of estate-grown Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot and Teroldego offers juicy, mouthwatering flavors of blackberry, blueberry and sweet oak that mingle with backnotes of earth and pepper-spice, with fine yet quite substantial tannins.
La Nerthe 2018 Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Cassagnes (Rhone Valley, France) $21.99
Power, structure and color are the signatures of this Côtes du Rhône. In appearance, it’s a deep crimson with violet hints. On the nose, vivid scents of red and black fruits along with floral and spice notes emerge. On the palate it’s fleshy and round, with a pleasing warmth.
Bien Nacido Estate 2019 Well Born Cuvée Syrah (Santa Maria Valley) $29.99
This Syrah from one of the most esteemed vineyards in the U.S. has an aromatic nose of black cherry liqueur, cracked peppercorns, cured meat, olive, clove and a hint of leather. The palate is framed with layers of fresh-picked forest berries, savory herbs and hints of exotic spices.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
Freemark Abbey 2017 Merlot (Napa Valley) $39.99
This Merlot is sourced from Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, Oakville, Calistoga and Rutherford, all premier appellations within the Napa Valley. It offers a silken texture coupled with a superb combination of flavor, complexity and depth, with an elegant, long and satisfying finish.
Poggio Civetta 2016 Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99
Expressive and smooth, this Classico hits all the right notes, with pure black cherry, black currant and violet flavors. Touches of earth, truffle and pipe tobacco add complexity. The tannins are nicely polished and the acidity is very well integrated with the wine’s rich fruit.
Klosterbrauerei Ettal Helles (Bavaria, Germany) $5.99
Ettaler is one of the last remaining monastic breweries, owned and operated by the monks of the Holy Order of St. Benedict since the year 1330. Their Helles is a classic example of the style, with a bready malt character well balanced by noble hops. The result is a refreshingly crisp, complex and delicious Bavarian lager.
Cheers!
